11 Aug R56 GASTROPUB – CONCEPT
When designing R56 Gastropub, our task was to reinterpret a hospitality space with an already strong identity and a significant historical background. Previously operating as the Revolution ’56 Freedom Fighters Pub, the venue was closely connected to the events of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. It was therefore important for us to preserve this connection within the new interior concept, while moving away from a literal recreation of the former theme towards a more contemporary, fresh and understated interpretation.
Throughout the design process, historical references were primarily integrated through the layering of materials, textures and details. The flooring, reminiscent of Budapest’s old cobblestone streets, exposed brick surfaces, timber and darker, earthy tones establish a subtle connection with the past. These elements were balanced with contemporary furniture, lighting and cleaner lines to create an atmosphere that feels lighter, younger and more relevant to the present.
One of the central elements of the concept was the bar and its backdrop, conceived as a unified architectural composition. The timber structure, inspired by vintage street notice boards, carries historical associations while also serving a practical purpose: concealed storage was integrated into its design, allowing this distinctive feature to become an essential part of the everyday functionality of the space.
The visualizations already reveal the duality that defined the entire project: preserving the valuable layers of the venue’s existing identity while creating a contemporary gastropub that feels natural and relevant to a new generation.
Rather than appearing as standalone decoration, references to the past are embedded within the materials, details and overall atmosphere of the interior, becoming an integral part of its renewed identity.
