The comprehensive interior renewal of R56 Gastropub was designed by Motifa Design Studio. The conceptual foundation of the project was deeply rooted in the historical context of the location and its connection to the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Our aim throughout the design process was to create a contemporary interior that subtly reflects the values of the past, while offering a fresh, youthful, and functional spatial experience.
Previously known as the Revolution ’56 Freedom Fighters’ Pub, the venue’s theme was closely tied to the events of 1956. The new identity respects this legacy, but instead of using direct visual references, it relies on more abstract, refined design tools—allowing the historical layers to be present in a subtle, yet tangible way.
Natural, durable materials were chosen to reflect authenticity and longevity. The floor structure is reminiscent of Budapest’s old cobblestone streets, creating a link to the city’s historic urban landscape. The interior color scheme is built around earth tones and deeper shades, evoking a sense of calm and character while reinforcing a timeless yet modern aesthetic.
In the rear of the guest area, the walls were stripped back to expose the original brickwork, creating a direct visual and material connection to the building’s past. This raw, honest surface provides a bold contrast to the clean, minimal elements in the space, strengthening the dialogue between old and new.
A defining feature of the space is the wooden wall cladding, designed in tandem with the bar, which recalls a vintage announcement board. This element not only serves a decorative and historical function, but also cleverly integrates hidden storage, while acting as a central visual anchor.
The renewed identity of R56 Gastropub is not just a stylistic refresh—it is a deeper reinterpretation that builds the space’s identity around the encounter of past and present. The interior pays respectful tribute to history while providing a modern, welcoming environment for today’s guests.
