Located in Budapest’s historic theatre district, in the world of the former Pest Broadway and just moments from Andrássy Avenue, the former ticket office of the Thália Theatre has been given a new purpose. The transformation of this distinctive space gave rise to Thália Vintage, an antique shop conceived not merely as a backdrop for an ever-changing collection, but as an integral part of the layered narrative created by its furniture, artworks and objects.
The existing architectural features played a fundamental role in shaping the design. A multifunctional counter organised around the structural columns supporting the mezzanine defines the centre of the shop, while creating a natural transition between the impressive double-height entrance area and the more intimate spaces towards the rear. Built-in furniture and storage systems emphasise the generous ceiling height and extend the composition vertically, while the mezzanine is connected to the ground floor through a carefully balanced system of open and enclosed elements.
The character of the completed interior is defined by the balance of deep blue and dove-grey tones with warm timber surfaces. Profiled cabinet fronts, open shelving and glazed display cases introduce subtle references to traditional craftsmanship, while the strong and consistent colour palette provides a contemporary framework for objects originating from different periods. It was essential for the interior architecture to have a distinct identity without competing with the collection itself, creating a setting in which each individual piece has the space to stand on its own.
One of the defining elements of the interior is the custom-composed mosaic flooring. Its small-scale, subtly graduated pattern evokes the ornate entrance halls and imposing inner courtyards of historic Budapest apartment buildings, reinterpreted through a contemporary approach. Shifting shades of grey, off-white and warmer neutral tones visually connect the different areas of the shop, while the rhythmic mosaic pattern introduces an additional graphic layer to the interior.
Lighting and decorative details further enhance the layered atmosphere of the space. Integrated illumination within the shelving and display cabinets highlights individual objects while adding depth to the darker furniture surfaces. At the same time, decorative lighting pieces and crystal chandeliers become part of the collection themselves. Large-scale paintings, textiles, carved furniture and smaller artworks form constantly evolving compositions, ensuring that the interior never feels static.
With Thalia Vintage, our intention was to create a timeless architectural framework that responds to the cultural and architectural heritage of its location while remaining flexible enough to accommodate a continuously changing collection. The distinction between contemporary interior design and objects from different eras is deliberately softened, allowing past and present to coexist and reinforce one another. The result is a distinctive yet inviting interior in which not only the individual antiques, but the space itself, becomes part of the story.
